Take our K-12 Without Racism Parent and Caregiver Survey!

Kindergarten to Grade 12 Without Racism is a parent and caregiver-led project by the Centre for Family Equity to address systemic racism in BC’s public K-12 education system. Led by Indigenous & racialized parents and caregivers, like many of YOU, we are working to end racism in BC’s public schools.

Our 30-minute anonymous survey for Indigenous and racialized parents gathers information on your child and family’s experience of racism within the school system. Our confidential survey focuses on issues of racism that your child and family has experienced in BC’s K-12 public education system: interpersonal racism between children; racial harm or erasure in school curriculum; systemic racism and colonialism in the school system; and lack of accountability in responding to racism.

All those who properly complete the survey and verify their identity as an Indigenous or racialized parent in BC will receive a $100 honourarium.

This survey is open to Indigenous and racialized parents with children/youth who are currently in the K-12 public system in the province of BC

Did you know:

  • Around 58% of students in Canada say they have seen other students insulted, bullied, or excluded based on their race or ethnicity.
  • Indigenous and racialized students are 2-3 times more likely than white students to experience race-based bullying, exclusion, or insults.
  • Twenty percent of students who experienced and reported racism say that the school ignored them.

BC’s Ministry of Education and Childcare recently launched a K-12 Anti-Racism Action Plan that is supposed to implement provincial-wide resources, training for staff, response guidelines for incidents of racism, and school policies to address racism. Under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan, BC must conduct an external review and address Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination in schools. Our K-12 Without Racism Project focuses on durable systemic change to uphold racism-free schools in BC’s K-12 system.

When our children and families face racism in the school system, they are unable to flourish, learn, play, and thrive. This racism must end. The Centre for Family Equity's 4-year K-12 Without Racism project will mobilize evidence-based, parent-led policy and law reform to transform BC’s School Act to ensure every child and youth can learn in an environment free from the harm of racism.
