Letter to the Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness on At-Risk Families and Family Violence in Emergencies

May 09, 2025

The Centre for Family has sent a letter to The Honourable Kelly Greene, M.L.A., Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness sharing research data and recommendations from the CFE's Justice at Work for Lone Mothers in BC research which studied the impact of the pandemic on low-income lone mothers.

The letter highlights urgent findings regarding how the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately harmed already at-risk low-income lone mothers and caregivers. The CFE recommends more robust gender-equity-based emergency planning, including the designation of gender-based violence services as essential services and the creation of a Vulnerable Populations Task Force focused on at-risk families.
