Our Active Kids BC community engagement findings shape the Physical Activity for Health Collaborative's "Consultation with Equity-Deserving and Less Active Families Engagement Report."

November 06, 2025

We have heard much through a multitude of community engagement with our membership about their significant challenges accessing physical activities for their children and youth, due to income barriers and the complex barriers they face due to their intersectional identities as equity-deserving families. We were delighted when an opportunity arose for us to engage our members and impacted families through our Active Kids BC engagement, supported by the BC Alliance for Healthy Living.

We carried out both virtual and in-person community engagement in Vancouver, Northern BC, with engagement from regions around the province, with low-income parents and caregivers to inform the Physical Activity for Health Collaborative's consultation with less-active and equity-deserving families.

Our findings, which reflect the lived experiences of parents and caregivers facing intersecting forms of marginalization, have been incorporated throughout the Engagement Report—including the identification of barriers, facilitators, and recommendations provided by participants. The inclusion of our community engagement data ensures that the voices and perspectives of low-income families in B.C. are meaningfully reflected in our collective understanding of physical
activity access.

Congratulations to the Physical Activity for Health Collaborative, the BC Alliance for Healthy Living, and the many organizations and entities that collaborated to carry out this important work and bring this impactful report about.
