Our letter to BC’s Minister of Labour calls for urgent reforms of BC's Employment Standards Act to improve employment standards for lone mother workers, who are raising over half of the children living in poverty in BC with high levels of precarious work. Based on findings from the CFE's UBC-partnered community-led study with 165 low-income lone mothers, the letter outlines how the COVID-19 pandemic deepened existing inequities related to precarious work, pushing many into increased precarity with exposure to exploitation, little to no job security, benefits, or support. The Centre highlights three key policy recommendations and Employment Standards Act reforms to address precarity and create a more just and resilient workforce for lone mothers and BC families.
