BC can't afford to leave women workers behind.

The COVID-19 pandemic hit lone mother-led families hard and we are seeing the impacts now. The child poverty rate in lone parent-led families in BC has worsened with a whopping 12.6% increase (First Call, 2024). We call for a suite of proactive policies and programs that remove barriers and build bridges to the labour market to ensure lone mothers'  economic inclusion, end the cycle of family poverty and strengthen BC's economy now at a time of economic uncertainty.

About us

The Centre for Family Equity, formerly known as the Single Mothers’ Alliance, addresses family poverty in BC through community-engaged research, policy recommendations, law reform, and support programs. Our intersectional equity approach considers how families experience systemic discrimination and socioeconomic inequality based on their identities. We work to create solutions that meet the real and evolving needs of families based on their lived experiences. Driven by our community-based organizing model and active member network, we determine our strategic priorities based on community engagement to create a BC where all families thrive.
